Class Description

In most training environments, the disciplines of musical theater are separated to provide depth and attention to detail. While specialization is beneficial to us in identifying and developing our skill sets, it conditions performers to think they have a "speaking voice" and a "singing voice." But the voice we use to speak, laugh, cry, shout, scream, yawn, and call out is the same voice we use when we sing! Simply put, singing and speaking on stage require similar techniques. Based on the research of Joan Melton and her publication One Voice: Integrating Singing and Theatre Voice Techniques, this class aims to unify singing and theater voice techniques in an approach that is energizing, vocally freeing, and infinitely practical. We will first identify and outline the six major elements of voice training that relate directly to theater voice: alignment, breathing, range, resonance, articulation, and connection (the acting dimension). Using this as a foundation, we will explore the connection and apply the overlap of theater voice across the various material formats (monologue, group scene, and song).

Peter Horecka

A 2017 graduate of the Lutheran affiliated Gustavus Adolphus College (St. Peter, MN), I am currently a freelance Audio Engineer in the greater Nashville area. Growing up in Franklin with current CYT Leadership Team member Elise Horecka, I spent my childhood performing with the Starbright and Pulltight community theatre programs, developing a passion for musical theatre and performance. After a quick, two-year stint playing junior hockey in central Canada, I spent the next four years at Gustavus, earning a degree in Communication Studies while also studying vocal performance and performing with the premier concert choir. Joining CYT Nashville is an exciting opportunity as I get to rekindle my passion for musical theatre and performance with the bright, talented young performers here in my hometown. Looking forward to a fun ride!
