Auditions

Students enrolled in CYT classes are invited to audition for our current production. Auditions typically consist of a one-minute song performed at open auditions with the Artistic Team. The choreographer generally teaches a short dance routine to a small group as well. The audition process may also include a “callback” in which a student may be asked to read for a speaking role in the play.  Auditions are a wonderful way for students to gain self-confidence and to show the best of their talents! If you are ready to shine on our stage, sign up for a class and secure your audition spot today!

How to sign up for an audition

Interested in auditioning for one of our upcoming productions? Signing up for an audition is a two step process.

First, you must have created a family account.  If you have not completed that step, stop and do that first.  You can find instructions HERE. Once you have created your family or if you already have a family account, simply log in and go to your dashboard.  There is a tool drop down menu next to each person on your family account to the far right.  Select the tool button next to the student that is auditioning (again, you must be between the ages of 8 - 17) and select Auditions.  Under their name you will find the button +New Audition Appointment and follow those steps.

Second, after you have signed up for your audition time, please fill out the Audition Form to provide your audition information.  This includes your headshot, audition track, body measurements (needed for costuming) and additional information.  Be sure to review the Audition Form and gather all information before submitting.  The link to the Audition Form will be provided when open for audition signups.

Both of these steps must be completed in order to audition for a show!

Quick Tips

  • You are limited to a one minute vocal audition. Your song must be between 30-60 seconds long. Show off the best of your talents!
  • Slate - this is when you introduce yourself with energy and confidence before you sing your song.
  • Smile, project, make eye contact with the directors, be personal and be yourself!
  • Be well prepared in every way, practice, practice, practice!
  • Sing an appropriate song in your range – a children’s song or show tune is recommended.
  • Accompaniment requirements can include sheet music or an instrumental MP3 or MP4 only track.  Please check the show page and audition form for specific to the show for which you are auditioning to find out what you need.  Here is a "how to" edit your track tutorial provided by CYT Dallas: How to Edit your Audition Track
  • You will also be asked to learn and perform a short dance routine and short monologue.

Casting

Not everyone is guaranteed a role after their audition. Unfortunately there are a limited number of spaces, and the number of students cast varies from show to show. However, if you are cast, here are some things to expect:
  • You must be at all rehearsals for which you are scheduled. If an absence is necessary, it must be clearly stated on your Audition Submission Form. Conflicts will be taken under consideration during casting. Any cast member missing more than two rehearsals may not be able to participate in the show. Conflicts (other than illness) presented after casting will not be allowed.
  • Leaving early or arriving late is considered a conflict, and must be approved prior to casting.
  • You must commit to approximately 40 hours of rehearsal time before move-in and dress rehearsal week.
  • You must attend Super Saturday and all dress/tech rehearsals.
  • More than two absences from your CYT class may result in dismissal from the show should class enrollment be required for participation in the production.
  • You must pay a Production Fee of $300 which includes a T-shirt.
  • Your parents must agree to attend two parent meetings and to serve approximately 20 hours on a production committee.
  • Each family is encouraged to sell at least 10 tickets to the show.
  • A student must be no older than 17 in order to participate & audition for the show. If student is turning 18 at anytime during the production, they are not eligible to participate. A student age 7, must turn 8 by the final performance to participate in the production.
